Command Line Update Utility

1. Required Environment

Firmware should be updated only when a local connection is available.  Firmware update over LAN/WAN is highly discouraged.  Interrupting the update process can damage the FLASH boot loader within the power controller, necessitating mail-in factory service.  A direct connection via crossover cable is recommended.  Once the update process is started, it must not be interrupted for any reason, or damage to the switch could occur.

The power controller contains both EEPROM and FLASH.   EEPROM is used to store outlet states, outlet names, user logins and scripts.  In most cases, EEPROM content will be unaffected by an update.  If you are updating from a version prior to 1.2.3, a ~30s delay may occur while EEPROM is reformatted.  Power to outlets may be cycled!

Some new features such as LCD control, serial ports, and scripting require that the appropriate hardware and expanded memory be installed in your unit.

2. Disconnect loads.

Disconnect any AC loads before proceeding.  Updates may cause changes in outlet states (on, off or cycling)!  Play it safe.

3. Shell to a command prompt.

Open a Windows command line prompt window using START->RUN->CMD <OK>   If you haven't done this before, click here for Microsoft's detailed explanation.

4. Download and save the utility.

Click here to download the utility zip.  Save it into the directory shown in the command prompt. The firmware version is reflected in the file name.  For example, FW-1.5.6.zip is version 1.5.6.

5. Enter firmware file name, IP and admin credentials.

For example, type: FW-1.5.0  192.168.0.100 admin:1234 to update a unit with default password and IP settings. Problems?  Try Ping 192.168.0.100 (or your IP) to verify connectivity.  You might need to add a compatible IP to Windows or disable the subnet restriction.  Did you use the PROTECT button to disable upgrade?  If so, press the reset-to-defaults button to unlock.

6. Enjoy!
